What's your answer?

Such a question was brought to me just now. I'm sitting here looking for an answer. Maybe I already know what it is, but really I feel so clueless. Help me a little.

    why would god cause something that is hurtful to you. that means is it you causing it to yourself?

    Yes BUT, How if not by "stress" would he get our attention? Could it be a test of devotion??
